Website Content Editor and Administrator

(Two-year fixed term contract)

About The Job

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Website Content Editor and Administrator within the Housing and Urban Studies Research Group of the Smart Places Cluster. The incumbent will be directly responsible for content administration of an online knowledge repository, namely the Urban Knowledge Exchange Southern Africa (www.ukesa.info). This would involve sourcing, editing and publishing new content, maintaining existing content, and generally ensuring that the knowledge platform is in a good state. The appointee will be required to write and package content and to maintain a high standard of written and visual communication. In addition, the appointee will be expected to provide similar support to other CSIR online content management systems and databases with a similar thematic scope. The position is based in Pretoria, and the appointee will be required to be present at the CSIR office. However, working remotely for agreed periods of time could be discussed. The appointee may be expected to travel locally from time to time.

About The Group

The work of the group generally relates to the planning, design and management of the built environment, with a particular focus on decision-support, policy and strategy research, and knowledge management and exchange in the human settlements domain.

Although not the only project that the appointee will work on, the uKESA website for which they would be responsible is a Content Management System (CMS) that houses a knowledge repository about urban and human settlements information relevant for the Southern Africa region.

Key Responsibilities

Content editing

  • Search for and source new, appropriate content for uploading to the website;
  • Check IP and document/image permissions (public access or not public access) relating to new content for the website (including articles, images, events, etc.) and make appropriate decisions according to the CSIR’s website policies;
  • Accurately and comprehensively classify website content using the existing metadata tagging system;
  • Write up content (generate text and source images) and, after approval, publish to the website;
  • Edit/proofread content submitted by other contributors to comply with the CSIR’s quality standards, style, and site policies.

Website content administration and maintenance

  • Work through existing uKESA site content and record updates needed (e.g. layout issues, broken links, grammar errors, poor quality of images);
  • Prepare a schedule of content maintenance work and execute systematically over time;
  • Keep detailed notes of, and report on, any software issues arising (bugs, suggested fixes or enhancements);
  • Use Google Analytics to track site usage and report on patterns and trends.

Technical writing and support

  • Train and support people in technical writing;
  • Support contributors and professionals to write up case studies, lessons learnt, advise on writing in accessible styles and help edit content to be accessible;
  • Contribute to research activities in the group and write up reports.

Skills, Experience And Qualifications

  • An NQF Level 6 relevant qualification in the fields of information technology, library and information science, etc. with at least five years’ experience in general website content administration and maintenance, HTML, working in a PHP environment, working with Google Analytics, content writing, editing, proofreading and basic packaging (layout and design) for online as well as hard copy publishing;
  • The ability to prepare content that is worded well, easy to read, understandable and accessible to all are essential skills for this position;
  • Experience in sourcing and classifying relevant documents and other content and uploading them to the website;
  • It would be a strong advantage if candidates with qualifications in these areas have experience related to the planning, design or management of human settlements, or have good domain knowledge and understanding of urban planning and the built environment as mentioned under experience” above;
  • Alternatively, the candidate should have a tertiary qualification (at least NQF Level 6) relevant to the planning, design or management of the built environment, e.g. architecture, urban planning/design, town and regional planning, urban geography, development planning, civil engineering, etc. It is essential that candidates with qualifications in these areas should meet all the experience and skills requirements described above.

Additional Requirements

  • The ability to work accurately and efficiently, with an eye for detail.
  • The ability to work for extended periods on online platforms.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.
  • Basic research experience would be an advantage.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
